Visual Arts Missisauga’s public programming offers engaging and comprehensive visual arts activities for the community. ArtReach, a curriculum-based program, is lead by highly qualified artist/instructors. A variety of visual arts workshops are available to choose from in a diverse range of mediums including clay, printmaking, acrylics, watercolours and more.

ARTREACH
For Schools, Community Groups, Daycare Centres and Adult Social Groups
Create a masterpiece in one of many mediums available. Our highly qualified artist/instructors will engage students either at your location or at VAM’s Art Centre located in beautiful Riverwood Park. Our 2-hour workshops include all art materials and can be linked to the Ontario Curriculum. Artreach is suited to students from JK to grade 12 or learners of any age. ARTREACH workshops are also available in French by request.
Cost
$9.00 per student. Minimum fee of $150.00 applies to groups of 16 or less. Maximum class size is 30.
Art Naturally!
For Schools, JK to Grade 12
Offered in partnership with The Riverwood Conservancy, Art Naturally! workshops blend the creativity of studio art with the exhilaration of hands-on field science for a full-day of art and outdoor exploration. Art Naturally! reflects the Ontario Ministry of Education Guidelines for elementary and secondary visual arts and science.
Cost
$12.00 per student. Minimum fee of $200.00 applies to groups of 16 or less. Maximum class size of 75 per visit.
ARTREACH Mural Program
For Schools, Community and Corporate Groups
With this hands-on experience you will develop a variety of artistic techniques, commemorate an event, expand curriculum, enhance self-confidence or foster a sense of community. Working with small groups, a professional artist will guide participants from the preliminary drawing to full execution of the mural. Each mural is designed with your input specifically for your organization.

Teacher Art Workshops
For groups of 8 or more elementary or secondary teachers
Join us in our studios or at your school for an exciting half or full day or art-making with colleagues. No experience required, our artist/instructors will guide you through your project with clear step-by step instructions. Each session will end with a friendly group critique. Workshops include printmaking, acrylic painting, clay sculpture and more.

All workshops meet Ontario Visual Arts Curriculum expectations and many meet expectations from other areas. Clay Sculpture: Students get their hands dirty while learning about the origins and properties of clay. A variety of hand-building techniques are explored while moving from raw clay to a finished sculpture.

Acrylic Painting: Exploring this most versatile of mediums, students discover new techniques while applying the elements and principals of design while creating a painting on canvas.

Canada -Group of 7 landscapes, Emily Carr trees, Doris McCarthy abstracted landscapes
Meet the Masters –, Modigliani: stretched to the limit portrait, Chagall: dreamscapes
Art for Art’s Sake- Floor cloth: mythical creatures, Eric Carle style collage
Mixed Media: Using a combination of approaches, students create visually exciting art pieces while learning.
Biodiversity - Nature journaling: Assemble a nature journal and begin to fill it with observations using watercolours and pencils.
Black History Month- Follow the North Star: a mixed media painting depicting the journey along the underground railroad.
Black History Month – Secret Codes: Using collage and printmaking techniques, students uncover the meanings of some secret codes and create a quilt square incorporating one or more of them.
Meet the Masters - Matisse: mixed media self-portrait
Drawing and Sketching:Students will develop observation, drawing and sketching skills as a means of recording information and communicating creative concepts.
Art for Art’s Sake– Sketchbook: Assemble a book and start sketching. Learn tips and tricks used by artists to improve accuracy
Cartooning- Cartooning and Storyboarding: Tell a story by designing a character and placing him or her in unique scenarios
Biodiversity- Plants and animals- Oil pastel: nature close-ups, Chalk pastel: rural landscapes or animals
Printmaking:An exciting way to create multiple images while employing texture, line and shape to achieve a balanced image.
Growth and changes in plants and animals - Collagraph: Ontario wildlife, Animals in our midst, Amazing insects
Communities around the world – Collagraph: Islamic Abstract patterns
First Nations – Relief print: Totem animals, Inuit legends
Urban and rural communities – Relief print streetscapes
Art for Art’s Sake - Lino: Self portrait and class portrait
Watercolours: Students will create light and whimsical art works while discovering washes, splashes and drips.
Seasons and Celebrations- Landscapes, Birds and Blossoms.
Metal Embossing: All about shine and dimension, metal embossing offers students the opportunity to create impressive bas-relief pieces reminiscent of medieval armor.

Teachers Always Participate for Free!
The Fine Print
Cancellations occurring less than 4 weeks prior to the booked date are subject to a $150.00 cancellation fee. Changes to the schedule are subject to a $25.00 administration fee after the first change.
Preparing for a visit:
- Because art can be messy, students should wear appropriate clothing; old t-shirts or aprons are perfect.
- Please arrange desks in groups of 4 or 6 to facilitate sharing of materials.
- Please cover desks with newspapers in advance.
- Please provide water buckets if no water is available in the room.
- Please remind students to practice their best listening skills.
- VAM instructors are not responsible for classroom discipline and will wait for teacher to regain control of the class if needed.
- Teachers are encouraged to participate and must be present at all times.
- Workshops are up to 2 hours in length and do not stop for recess.
